Church Planting:
The next phase of the mission

“The single most effective evangelistic methodology under heaven is planting new churches.”

– C. Peter Wagner, Church Planting for a Greater Harvest

The next phase of our mission to connect every Muslim to a follower of Jesus

For nearly three decades Crescent Project has continued in a lead role throughout the global Christian community to explore fresh and effective ways of relationally and personally reaching Muslims with the hope of Christ.

Through our resources, trainings, events, and activities of our deployed field staff we are now entering the next significant phase of development: Church Planting.

Why Church Planting?

1. Planting churches follows the 2,000-year-old biblical example of Jesus and the early church

In the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20), Jesus called upon the followers he had invested in to go and make disciples. Implied in Jesus’s charge is the need to invite others to follow Christ necessitating the formation of communities wherein new believers may foster an ever deepening, informed faith, challenged to live out both the Great Commandment and Great Commission.

2. Planting churches is the most effective means of evangelism

New churches are the most effective means of reaching non-Christians in any culture. Of course, there must be a core of Christ followers before any church may be planted. Often, however, if new believers come to faith in the absence of a supportive “community” they lose heart and give up quickly. A new church plant, even if only comprised of 3 or 4 individuals, gives significant encouragement, mutual accountability, and a built-in mechanism of care and instruction.

A new church plant has also proven to be far more attractive to the “spiritually curious” within any culture. An established church will see 90%* of new attendees coming from another church. In contrast, nearly 42%* of new church attendees in a church plant report no previous church affiliation.

The bottom line: Most church plants baptize more new believers and create more new disciples than already existing churches.

What is a Church Plant?

Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst.” (Matthew 18:20)

In the West when one hears about church planting, images of buildings come to mind. However, the essence of a church can be as simple as just a few gathering in a home or under an awning.

Crescent Project seeks to plant churches among hard-to-reach peoples (Muslims) in underreached places (Muslim dominant arenas). A church plant may be a cluster of small house churches banded together by a single church planter. A church plant may also in rare cases have the capacity to be dozens if not hundreds of people. A church, however, is not defined by having a building. Our definition of a church, following the model of Acts 2:42, is simple.

A church is:

A biblical community of people seeking Christ surrounded by others who are growing in Christ, desiring to evangelistically reach their region with the message of Christ resulting in disciples of Christ under a trained shepherd firmly rooted in Christ.

How is Crescent Project Planting Churches?

The conventional model for a mission agency to plant churches in faraway places has been to select a church planting couple (typically non-indigenous), to train them in language and culture, and then to send them into a foreign place to begin fostering relationships and creating projects with the hope of developing a church.  In some cases, a church was planted, but too often, the result was disappointment.

The methodology of Crescent Project begins with the assumption that God provides the potential, passion and brilliance on the ground well before we get there. Our initial task is to find where God is already moving and determine if we can come alongside that effort.

Many are doing good things in the name of Christ in some very hard places. We are, however, constrained to find the most effective, indigenous expressions and capable leaders with whom to partner.

In some cases, we will identify church planters and supply the necessary training and resources. In other cases, we will discover where church planters are being trained in-country by solid indigenous leaders who provide not only training but local accountability.

The strength of this option is obvious coupled with the fact that they are raising up individuals whose heart language and culture already match the target group—a major deterrent to success of previous models.

Where is Crescent Project Planting Churches?

2022 India (with nearly 200 million Muslims) was our first country target, where we will plant our first new churches in Muslim communities.

2023 Indonesia
2024 Pakistan & Bangladesh

Why India?

An astounding one third of all unreached people of the world live in India. In fact, there are more Muslims in India than all of Europe. India alone has approximately two-thirds as many Muslims as all 22 Arab countries combined!

Our Announcement —

Due to your generosity during December 2022, as of March 2022 our first 40 church planters are preparing to begin their focused work in Muslim communities in major cities throughout India. Each has successfully completed a two-year training, during which most will plant 1-3 churches. Over the next 10 years, each church planter will go on to plant more than 10 churches! So — your kingdom investment into one new church will yield possibly 5-fold, 10-fold or more over time.

How to Help Plant Churches?

Our 2022 goal was to plant as many as 300 new churches, based upon the funds received. So, there is plenty of room for you to help! Planting a church from country to country will vary greatly. The cost of planting a church in our first focus country, India, is $500.

At $500 per church plant in India, perhaps your small group, family, or church could sponsor one or more! The cost per church plant is very reasonable and includes training, materials, basic salary support for two years and local accountability and oversite.

OUR 2022 TOTAL GOAL: $150,000
(CURRENT GIFTS RECEIVED: $20,000)

Your gift will help us plant churches in 2023!
